Glory of Audikesava

Sri Audikesava appeared from the Sayana Yagam performed by Maharishi Brigu with Sangu Chakaran in his hands with long curly hair (kesam) hence called Kesavan. The rishees workshipped the Lord as sayana Kesavan since apperared from Sayana Yagam.

He has given peacock flag (Kodi) to Sooryakula king sumanagan and hence workshipped as mayura Kesavan.

He was also workshipped as Audikesavan since resolved the sin of Adhithyan (Sun God).

Lord Kesavan also cured the disease of Chandra (Moon) in this Kshthra. Lord Kesavan instructed all Punniya Nadhees (Holy Rivers) Ganga, Kaveri, Godhavari etc to get mixed with this theertham where Chandra took a dip and cured his disease. Hence this pushkarani is called Sarvatheertham and also Chandra Pushkarani presently known as Chitrakulam.

The Avatharam of Sri Audikesava is described in " Garuda Purana" in third chapter. This book is maintained in Madras Oriental Govt. Library in D15299.

Sri Audikesavan is considered to be Lord who has come for the rescue of Elephant Gajendra, when he cried to get rid from the clutches of crocodile.

Thirumazhisai Alwar sung this Kshethram as "Neelotham Vandhalaikkum Maamylai, Thirumangai Alwar sung this Kshethram as "Oppavarilla Madhargai Vazhum Madamamylai Thenamar Solai Madamamylai Thennan Thodayar Kon Seitha Nan Mylai" .

Sri Andal has sung Mylai Kesava Perumal in her Thiruppavai seventh pasuram. Sri Andal through this Pasram "Keesu Keesu" supposed to have been waking up Sri Peyalwar. In the same pasuram she too has sung Mylai Kesavan as "Kesavanai Padavum nee kette kidathiya".

Sri Thirumazhisai Alwar in his first thiruvallikeni pasuram has sung Mylai Kesavan as "purameri seitha sivanuru thuyar kalai thevai". Kesavan is supposed to have resolved the sin (sapam ) of Sri Kapali as described in Garuda Purana.

In the Second pasuram "Vedathai vedathin suvai payanai vizhungum Thirumangai Alwar Kuvalayathor thozuthethum Adiayi. Here Sri Thirumangai Alwar is Refferring Sri Peyalwar as Vedathai vedathin Suvaipayanai Vizhumiya munivar. Since Peyalwar has workshipped only Kesavan as His Arathana Perumal by saying "Vizhungum Kothilin Kani" he is referring only kesavaperumal and by saying "adhiyai" he is confirming the same.

Sri Thiruvalluvar lived near this temple and lived as Vaishnavite. He has reffered only Lord Vishnu in his Thirukural verses. In his first Thirukural he has said "Agaranudhala ezhuthellam adhi baghavan muthatrea ulagu". He is referring Adhi Kesavaperumal only as Adhi Bhagavan.
